A Traditional Publisher Goes High-Tech

The Folio Society is an online retailer selling and shipping beautifully illustrated hardback books direct to customers. The business has seen strong sales growth since launching a new online platform and ecommerce strategy in 2018. Customers are 30% UK-based and 70% international. Book lovers worldwide can choose from over 250 titles, including new editions from the Marvel series. The Folio Society is also known for its limited-edition publications: books which are limited to between 250–1000 copies and priced between £250 and £1000 per copy.
Bound by a lack of integration
The Folio Society suffered from a lack of integration between its previous Mailbrain ERP system and other financial, customer, and sales reporting tools. Staff struggled to make sense of the files emanating from them all. The business implemented NetSuite ERP to centralise its data in an easily accessible system, as well as automate sales orders and invoicing.
On the same page
The Folio Society works with multiple suppliers to produce a product, each resulting in 20-30 purchase orders and item receipts. Customised NetSuite dashboards help by providing snapshots of when invoices are due, when books are ready for despatch and delivered, sales volumes, year-on-year sales growth, and other detailed KPI reporting that the team uses for smarter decision-making.
The next chapter
The Folio Society has been growing its presence in the US market and exploring new ways to boost sales, including the introduction of e-gift cards. It aims to implement other NetSuite modules to improve understanding and control of its growing international business, especially in the US.
