Level 3 Turns Up Growth with Head-Turning Audio Visual Systems

Like so many successful businesses, Level 3 Audio Visual started in a garage. Founder and CEO Brad Peterson saw a business opportunity in the rapidly rising popularity of audio visual systems and started designing and installing monitors and speaker systems with a few collaborators in 1996. Level 3 distinguished itself with the quality of its work—it stages every project in its warehouse before installation—and works with corporations, universities, governments and healthcare facilities.

“We pushed all the KPI metrics for HR into the executive dashboards so they know how many employees we have and our turnover rate. Everyone has personalised dashboards so they can self-manage.” Miriam Armada-Blumer, NetSuite System Engineer, Level 3 Audio Visual

Engineering an Industry Leader

Earning customers’ loyalty
After enduring The Great Recession, Level 3 entered a high-growth period—revenue tripled over a four-year period. Big projects with multinational banks, universities and local governments powered much of that growth. Those key clients became repeat customers when future projects came up, another key to Level 3’s fast climb.
Chasing ever-evolving technology
As technology changes rapidly, the company must design AV systems that won’t quickly become outdated and can support minor upgrades. Additionally, as Level 3 added customers and employees, the combination of QuickBooks accounting, Salesforce.com CRM, SharePoint for project management/support and manual HR processes was no longer tenable.
Unifying operations, automating HR
The Arizona-based company replaced that patchwork with NetSuite, a cloud platform its largely remote workforce can access anywhere. Later, it added SuitePeople HR and U.S. Payroll to automate PTO management—eliminating four hours of work every month—and to track employee certifications. Level 3 integrated SuitePeople with Oracle Taleo Cloud for applicant tracking and employee onboarding.
Finding a new niche
Level 3 launched a subsidiary, Level 3 Healthcare, that specializes in AV systems for healthcare simulation rooms, which it expects to fuel future growth. The business also completed international projects in Asia and Europe and anticipates more work with global organizations.
