GK Enchanted Farm Races to End Poverty With Faster, More Streamlined Operations

Gawad Kalinga (GK) Enchanted Farm has one ambitious goal: ending poverty in the Philippines. Established in 2010 by the GK Foundation, the farm is an incubator and university for social enterprises in communities across the country. It supports up to 500 social enterprises in their quest to increase wealth for local farmers and create zones for peace. The farm is also a growing destination for eco-tourism.

From Farm to Incubator

Beginning with ad hoc systems: Initially, small transaction numbers allowed staff to manage finances with spreadsheets. But as GK Enchanted Farm shifted the mindset of poverty, it morphed into a Silicon Valley-like environment, drawing massive interest. In 2014, the farm reached a breaking point: a backlog of manual work left no time to dream.

Increased complexity = manual backlog: The farm’s back-office is based on 10 business units spanning food service, sales and hospitality. Monitoring foot traffic, sales and payroll was challenging. Tax compliance was a four-person job. The farm became reactive, with no visibility into growth potential.

Streamlined accounting creates large gains: Launched in 2014, NetSuite introduced consistent formatting for budget requests, expense reports, revenue streams and cost centres, enabling higher efficiency and better forecasting. GK Enchanted Farm cut processing time by 80% and is now able to perform six-month budget projections.

Efficiency enables business expansion: GK Enchanted Farm offers social entrepreneurs a hub for education and support, addressing needs like branding, accounting and marketing in shared service centres. The farm intends to create separate businesses of these centres—a much easier transition with NetSuite in place.
